BEHIND THE LITTLE FACES

Lunar New Year Emoji Meanings

04 / THE DICTIONARY
🀄

Mahjong, the red dragon, and “fa cai” ↗

🀄 is the red-dragon tile marked 中; 🀅 is the green-dragon tile marked 發. Both fit a festive mahjong-night message, while 發 also plays on 發財, a wish for prosperity. The green tile is a Unicode text symbol rather than a standard color emoji, so its appearance depends on fonts.

When does Lunar New Year begin?

Spring Festival begins on the first day of the first lunar month, usually in January or February. The date and zodiac animal are calculated automatically in the calendar above.

Should I use a sheep or a goat?

For the 羊 zodiac sign, greetings may use sheep 🐑 or goat 🐐. Both are included in the grid; the English name is commonly Year of the Goat.

Will these look the same on every device?

You copy standard Unicode characters. Apple, Google, and Samsung draw them differently; support for newer emoji depends on your device and app.

Can I make my own combo?

Yes. Each grid card copies one emoji and adds it to the builder. Repeats are allowed. Remove individual choices, undo the last one, or clear and start again.
